Types of editing include the following:
Developmental Editing- This type of editing focuses on the overall structure, plot, character development, and narrative flow of your manuscript. Expect to pay between $3,200 and $5,600, based on a typical range of $0.04 to $0.07 per word.
Copy Editing- focuses on clarity, style, and consistency, typically costs more than proofreading. Expect between $1,600 and $3,920, depending on the editor's experience and the complexity of the text.
Proofreading- a proofreader meticulously reviews a written document for errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, and style inconsistencies to ensure accuracy and clarity, ultimately polishing the final product for publication. Expect between $800 and $1,600, with rates generally ranging from $0.01 to $0.02 per word.
Line Editing- focuses on sentence structure, clarity, and flow with cost between $1,600 and $2,320 based on industry averages, with rates typically ranging from $0.025 to $0.040 per word.
Fact-checking- costs between $2,000 and $4,720, depending on the type of editing and the editor's experience.
Ghostwriting- If you want someone to write the book for you based on your ideas, ghostwriting costs can range from $20,000 to $80,000 or more, depending on the ghostwriter's experience, the genre, and the complexity of the project.
Beta Readers
A "beta reader" is someone who provides feedback on a nearly finished manuscript, offering an average reader's perspective to help authors identify potential issues and improve their work before publication. Beta readers help authors identify problems like plot holes, inconsistencies, unclear passages, and pacing issues from a reader's perspective.
Some will provide this free service (look up "Free Beta Readers") or will swap a read-for-a-read service, which can be a good way to find a friend who's on the same path as you.
